Diaspora Co. x PODI life Spice Kit

We used five spices sourced by Diaspora Co. in the making of this Spice Kit, along with other organic lentils and spices. 

 

Spices sourced by Diaspora Co:

Turmeric: 

This iconic turmeric is grown by Kasaraneni family amidst marigolds, bananas, and black rice on their 3rd generation farm in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. 

Coriander: 

Grown on the Sakariya family farm amidst custard apples, guavas, and heirloom wheat, our Nandini coriander is named after the Sakariya family's beloved cow, the undisputed matriarch of their regenerative farm. It's a variety that Dharmesh, a third generation farmer and natural farming expert has keenly developed for its incredible fragrance and vibrant color in Shedubhar, Gujarat.

 Cumin:

Grown on Prahlad Ramji's small family farm in Inana, Rajasthan, and rotated with a range of indigenous millets, this cumin is Pralad's first truly organic harvest as a self-taught natural farmer. The farm is on the edge of the Thar Desert, which has the perfect scorching, arid climate for truly flavorful cumin.

 Pepper:

Grown on the Parameswaran family farm in Thirunelly, Kerala, where Parameswaran and his son Akash have been naturally farming pepper for over 35 years, amidst passion fruit, tigers (no, really!), and the largest collection of bamboo and palm varieties in the region! Their Aranya pepper is vine ripened, hand harvested with utmost care to ensure maximum flavor and unreasonably tasty.

 Sannam chilies:

Grown in accordance with the principles of zero budget natural farming on the Narne family farm in the historic chili growing region of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. Brothers Hanumantharao and Satyanarayana Rao make us believe in the future of sustainable agriculture in India, as our elders, and teachers.

 

Note about manufacturing and packaging:

These spices along with USDA Certified organic lentils were all slow roasted individually and ground in a stone mill (as traditional as it gets!) and blended with small-batch dried tamarind powder to make the most perfectly flavorful kits!

These blends were packed in screen printed pouches. Each pouch was screen printed by hand by a small team of 4 over a period of 2 weeks. We were honored to provide this team much-needed essential income in the aftermath of the 2nd wave of COVID in India. This also means that you will see minor imperfections and variations in printing, as is true for anything that is hand-made. 

Tangy Rasam Spice Kit:

Ingredients: Organic toor dal, Nandini coriander, South Indian Forest tamarind, Aranya black pepper, Naguri cumin seeds, Guntur Sannam red chili, curry leaves, Pragati turmeric, crystal salt

 Hearty Sambar Spice Kit:

Ingredients: Guntur Sannam red chili, Nandini coriander, Organic lentils (toor dal/split pigeon peas, chana dal/split chickpeas), Aranya black pepper, Nagauri cumin, South Indian Forest tamarind, Curry leaves, organic fenugreek seeds, Crystal Sea Salt, Organic mustard seeds, Pragati Turmeric
